“So, what do you do?” This is a question I get asked a lot, and when I answer; “I’m a Hazardous Waste Specialist.” I am usually met with a look of bewilderment. So, here’s what I do in a nutshell for those of you who are curious about the world of Hazardous Waste Management!
What is Hazardous Waste?
Hazardous waste is created from manufacturing and industrial processes which either contains elements of or is explosive, flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive or oxidising.
Hazardous waste can come in the form of liquid, solid and gas and can potentially be dangerous to people, animals and our environment if not handled and disposed of correctly.
Me and Hazardous Waste
My job involves identifying, packaging, collecting, transporting and performing the appropriate disposal of hazardous waste for various companies whilst following strict health and safety requirements.
It is vital that I maintain records and a thorough database on all accumulated hazardous waste interactions and properly destroy waste so that it poses no threat.
Another huge element of my job role involves advising workers regarding proper hazardous waste management techniques and providing technical assistance, educational training and workshops upon request for businesses and their employees.

A degree in Chemistry, Safety or Industrial Engineering (or something similar), as well as a desire to work hard and learn extensively about chemical and hazardous substances, is a must. You need knowledge of hazardous materials management practices and techniques, chemical compatibility and hazard classes, skills in analysing hazardous waste as well as confidence in both your verbal and written communication.
