Hazchem Services was recently asked to collect some copper chrome arsenate (CCA) waste from a rural subsidiary of a large company in the North Island.
On arriving on site, the Regional Health and Safety Manager was present and was conducting an audit. Unbeknownst to Hazchem Services, the customer should have set our company up in their approved contractor management system prior to engaging our services.
However, as the job involved removing some highly toxic chemicals from the site and was a long way from NZ metropolitan areas the company wanted to be practical and see if the job could proceed.
Hazchem Services were asked about how we would conduct the job safely, what PPE (personal protective equipment we would use) and whether we had appropriate licences and insurances for the job.
Hazchem Services was able to provide copies of our insurances, our risk assessment (job safety analysis) for chemical collection works, a copy of our QHSE (Quality, Health and Safety and Environment) Policy and provide evidence of our certifications and of being party to Prequal which is one of the third-party independent Health and Safety auditing companies operating nationally.
We were able to describe how we would undertake the job safely, provided all labels and packaging and showed the company how the drums would be secured within our vehicle. We showed the health and safety manager our spill kit and PPE including full-face respirator and gloves and provided a dangerous goods manifest and a copy of the Emergency Procedure Guide (SAA/SNZ HB76:2010) we carry in place of Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s) for all of our jobs.
On completion, the health and safety manager approached us and provided us with some of the best feedback we’ve had to date that, “It is great to see a company that operates so professionally”.
It’s amazing to get such great feedback. But what else could we expect? We strive to provide a high level of safety, customer service and care for the environment because
Hazchem Services are proud to be New Zealand owned and operated.
